Tauranga Music

September sees the return of one of Tauranga's favourite concert performers, Andrew London, but for the first time he's bringing a brand new band with him.

Many will have seen Hot Club Sandwich, for many years the country's premier swing trio, noted not only for their fantastic musicianship but also a slew of humorous songs skewering the pretentions of middle class New Zealand.

Now band leader, singer and songwriter Andrew London has put Hot Club Sandwich to bed and is out on the road showcasing his songs with a new outfit, the Andrew London Trio, along with wife Kirsten London on bass and ex-Hot Club Sandwicher Nils Olsen on sax, clarinet and flute.

If you haven't yet been exposed to the band then the song titles say it all: 'Let's Talk About Me', 'I Hugged My Mate', 'Country's Buggered', 'I Think I'll Buy a Yacht', 'I'd Never Let My Daughter Out With Frank Sinatra'... Andrew's whimsical songs reflect the national psyche with gentle irreverence, and playfully lampoon many of New Zealand society's obsessions and taboos.

Recent reviewers have made comparisons to Fred Dagg, Flanders and Swann and even Noel Coward.

Along with Andrew in the trio are ex-Hot Club Sandwich woodwind exponent Nils Olsen contributing jazz-influenced saxophone, clarinet and flute. The bass chair is occupied by Kirsten London, also active with Kapiti-based quartet Henpicked.

These concerts will also be a musical reunion, as the trio will be supported at both shows by Tauranga's Self-Righteous Brothers, comprising Derek Jacombs and Nigel Masters from popular blues & roots band Kokomo.

Tickets are also available at Creative Tauranga: 112 Willow St, Tauranga 3110. 07-928 5270
