One hundred porcelain and terracotta dolls will be on show at Taupō Museum this month, with a new exhibition from former Taupō artist Marita Green.

The ceramic dolls will be on display with children’s books to encourage viewers to ponder the idea of childhood. “Childhood is a universal experience, coloured by the passage through adulthood, which brings grown-up judgement, hazy recall and wistful nostalgia,” Marita said.

Using memory and infancy for the inspiration behind her work, the children’s books and Marita’s ceramic child-dolls combine to challenge the viewer’s perception and ponder how to understand childrens’ reality. Marita said although the exhibition features dolls, it is a collection that will appeal to all ages.

The 100 porcelain and terracotta dolls of this exhibition were made over 100 successive days from May to September in 2013 as part of the 100 Days Project. The 100 Days Project is an annual art and design challenge where participants repeat an artistic action every day for 100 days, and post an image of each work online. The idea is to develop creatively through repitition and accountability.

Marita said all the dolls, regardless of their artistic success or physical integrity, have been included in the show. Some were damaged during the firing processes, but there are no edits, which makes this an unusually honest journey through an artist’s practise.

Marita grew up in Taupō, and now lives in New Plymouth with her husband and two young sons.

The exhibition will officially open in the Niven Room with a tea party at 10.30am on Saturday, January 18 and run until March 4. All the pieces on display will be for sale.

Taupō Museum is open seven days from 10am to 4.30pm. Entry is free to children and Taupō district residents with proof of address.

Join Marita for a very special tea party to celebrate the opening of 100 Childrens' Stories on Saturday 18 Jan.
