This class will cover a wide range of possibilities in wood including turning, carving and surface decoration. By turning on the lath, cutting and hand carving students will learn to make their own forms in wood.

Grahame is a master of embellishing and finishing a wooden surface and he will share techniques and tricks of the trade with students; including carving and texturing techniques.

This course will cover design and influences, tool selection and sharpening, wood selection, finishing techniques and safety. Students will be able to initiate projects to suit their skill level, making this course suitable for both beginner and advanced woodworkers. Led by an experienced tutor this will be a techniques based workshop with helpful advice on how to find your own creative identity.

The Summer Do Art School is the longest running mixed media art school in New Zealand and is proudly hosted in January every year in beautiful and inspirational environment at the Quarry Arts Centre in Whangarei.

With a long history of professional art courses lead by tutors who stand out in their field of practice the Summer Do offers 7 and 3 days courses over a variety of media and disciplines.

We invite you to join us by enrolling in one of the hand-on courses on offer giving yourself the opportunity for you to learn something new or perfect your techniques in a stimulating and fun course in our supportive, social and encouraging environment.

The Summer Do also includes evening informal talks by participating tutors and relaxed evening activities.

Register your interest in any of the Summer Do courses by contacting the Quarry Arts Center. We will send you more information about the course content and materials lists, then, once you are sure you want to do the course you will be asked to secure your booking with a deposit and then in due course full payment.

Campsites are available onsite at a cost of $60 per person for the duration of the Summer Do. We can also offer advice on local, low cost accommodation, or may be able to assist billeting with local students.

Summer Do courses are for students 18 and over. A Summer Do for younger people (7 to 17 years) runs from the 14th to the 18th of January. Open to beginners and experienced creative people.

The annual “Summer Do” is held in the beautiful and inspirational environment at the Quarry Arts Centre located minutes from Whangarei. The Quarry is the perfect place to immerse yourself in a 7.5- day or 3-day art courses designed to be stimulating, inclusive, intensive and fun. We invite you to join us, to gain and share experiences and knowledge in the hands of an experienced renowned tutor in this supportive, social and encouraging environment. The “Do” also includes informal talks by participating tutors and fun evening events.
