The rocks and landscape of Wellington are the product of a remarkable geological history spanning hundreds of millions of years. This course will provide a practical introduction to ‘reading the rocks’ which will let us to piece together the story of how the rocks formed and how they have been moved, uplifted, deformed and sculpted into the landscape we see today. Included is a walk through the CBD to Oriental Bay, followed by a bus trip to key sites around Wellington to get a ‘hands-on’ experience of geology in the field.

Dr Cliff Atkins is a Lecturer in Geology within the School of Geography, Environment and Earth sciences at Victoria University. His areas of research interest are sedimentology, stratigraphy and Antarctic geology.
