In the 1800s, long before the Main Trunk Railway was finished, the Whanganui River was the main route north. Travel by riverboat from Wanganui to Pipiriki was followed by a long muddy slog for horse and cart up the road to Raetihi, which was a welcome rest stop for both man and beast.

The 25 km section of road from Pipiriki to Raetihi was finally sealed in late 2010, and to celebrate this historic event, the Raetihi Gutbuster bike ride was born. It’s a chance to experience this hilly sealed road in a fun atmosphere. Starting outside the Waimarino Museum in Raetihi, the ride heads out of town, with a five kilometre downhill section, then through rolling farmland until a steep 2km climb takes you to the Waipuna turnoff and the first drink station. It’s here that the 18km option turns around and heads home to Raetihi while the other riders carry on downhill to Pipiriki, where the 25km 'downhill riders' get a bus back, and the 50km 'Gutbusters' turn around for the 25km uphill return journey.

The 18km option is challenging, but ‘do-able’ for families, and people who haven’t done much training. It’s deceptively short but has two big hills. The 50km option is classed as a ‘Fun ride’, but competition is rife, and the first rider makes it home in just over 1hr 45m.
