Christmas has long been a traditional holiday for the many diverse Christian sects around the world.

However the Gnostic Christians of the era of Christ saw the traditional story of the birth of Christ from a symbolic or esoteric perspective, as well as an historical event.

Who is the Gnostic Christ? Gnosis views the Christ, the Krestos, as the universal fire that liberates the consciousness of the human being to the reality of the Divine through direct knowledge.

The universal fire - Krishna, Osiris, Avalokitesvara, Quetzalcoatl or Christ - is that which sustains, nourishes and transforms all things. It is the force that manifests in the heart of every atom, every planet, solar system and every human being. The ancient Gnostics saw the Christ in this way and saw the man Jesus Christ as the embodiment of this reality. They also understood that others have incarnated this reality in them and still many more would do so in the future. Their view was, at the very least, controversial- many would say heretical.

Contemporary Gnosis looks at the Christ-force in different ways and understands this force as being present in each person. If we could consciously connect with this aspect within our own heart, we can then hold a different perspective of ourself and others and rather than being saved by a person, we can be liberated through direct knowledge.

This day will be held with Gnostic students from the Association and so will include meditations and practices related to the mysteries of the internal Christ. We hope this may bring a more mystical appreciation of or, at the very least, an alternative view of Christmas and of what truly is a universal celebration- the unfolding of the solar fire in the heart of the human being!
