Love and War: The Dominion Post Summer Concert at Government House

A relaxed picnic on the lawns of Government House, beguiled by music as delicious as the contents of one’s lunchbox, rounded off by an exciting salvo of genuine cannons – what a perfect summer’s day!

In this format, the annual Government House concert has become a beloved feature on Wellington’s entertainment calendar.

But in 2013 we decided it had to be different and better. So we asked ourselves, could we possibly add more artillery?

Why, yes we could!

So in 2013, the newly re-named Orchestra Wellington comes out fighting for its first concert of the year with “Wellington’s Victory”, a battle symphony by Beethoven that calls for muskets, bugles, fanfare trumpets, the drum corps of the RNZAF Central Band, and possibly even some non-lethal re-enactements, as well as the historical replica cannons we’ve been using in the past.

The theme of Orchestra Wellington’s concert at Government House is “Love and War”.

On the love side of the equation we’ll have some memorable versions of Romeo and Juliet from Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky, as well as gorgeous love scenes from Bernstein’s West Side Story.

Our soloists include two singers that Wellingtonians have really taken to their hearts after recent performances in the capital: soprano Emma Fraser and mezzo-soprano Bianca Andrew. They’ll be joined onstage by the amazing counter tenor Stephen Diaz, most recent winner of the NZ Aria Competition.

Diaz and Fraser will present a special treat: two complete scenes from Bellini's bel canto masterpiece I Capuletti e i Montecchi.

Host for the afternoon’s entertainment will be composer Gareth Farr, who will share the stage with his alter-ego Lilith Lacroix.
