A special part of the community is gearing up to break a world record. On Tuesday December 3 at 12.30pm, more than 200 people in wheelchairs will break the Guinness World Record for ‘longest moving line of wheelchairs’ - and we want you to be one of those people!

The record-breaking line will be assembled to travel along Halsey Wharf, outside the Viaduct Event Centre. The record will be set by members and friends of The Cube, viewers of Attitude TV and interested members of the public - that means you!

The current record was set on July 25 2010 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles at an event organised by the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. The record stands at 193 wheelchairs.

In conjunction with The Cube and Attitude TV, the event will take place on the 21st anniversary of the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a day to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and wellbeing of persons with disabilities.

The Cube is an innovative initiative bringing together almost a dozen organisations, which provide services to young people with disabilities. Being that it exists for youth who live, work, study or play in Auckland and enable young people with disabilities to make informed, individual choices, The Cube operates on the basis of ‘for young people by young people’. Activities are driven by its specially created Youth Engagement Group (YEG) and aim to support young people and their families to participate in education, health, recreation and employment activities - contributing to a strong sense of belonging and pride in their communities.

Attitude Pictures, the world’s leading provider of television content about the lives of people living with disability, is supporting The Cube in this event. Later the same evening, the annual ‘Attitude Awards’ will be celebrated at the Viaduct Event Centre with a spectacular black tie event. Awards will be presented across seven categories to people with extraordinary talents. Saluting artists, sportsmen and women, people with intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, mental health issues and those who are both young and old, as well as the employers who work alongside people with disabilities, the awards aim to draw attention to the 17% of New Zealand’s population who live with disability.

The World Record attempt is open to people of any age and ability. However it is, in most cases, BYOW – “bring your own wheelchair”. There will be some wheelchairs available for you to use, but if you can access your own that would be great!

Everyone involved will receive a free t-shirt and be eligible for spot prizes on the day. The Getin2life Youth Development Trust will have ‘street games’ set up outside the Viaduct Events Centre, throughout the afternoon, including pedal cars, scooters, hula hoops, swing ball and tug-o-war. Everyone is welcome to participate in these and get along to support The Cube on such a special day.
