Music and art in the Park

27th January: Broadway to Met;
3rd February: Duos in the Park;
10th February: Country in the Park;
17th February: Brass, pipes and drums in the Park;
24th February: Naked Gun in the Park.

Broadway to The Met: January 27th:
An exciting range of entertainment has been organised and the first concert will kick off with Broadway to The Met. Those involved in the 'Broadway' segment will be Kerry Unsworth and Jeff Foley who both starred in Napier Operatic's recent production of Spamalot. Dave Richardson - well known entertainer and pianist currently directing "British Music Hall Memories” which goes to stage in November at the Playhouse will also perform along with Tessa Brown, a stalwart of local theatre and Operatunity and Mike Sheely who also was in Spamalot.

The 'opera' segment the wee gem in the middle of the programme, will include Joe Christensen, Jose Aparicio and Oriana Kershaw.

Duo’s in the Park: February 3rd:
Savornine are a Hawke's Bay duo that features Jacqui Thompson and Jeff Reid. Since 2008 they have been performing around the Bay at cafes, wineries, and events such as Summer in the Park, Live After 5, Their music covers a wide range of new songs and old standards, all given a fresh urgency by Jacqui's smokey jazz vocals and Jeff's bluesy finger-style guitar. Their debut CD "Red Black Blue" earned praise and can be heard on local and international radio stations. They have built a strong following for their live performances.

Devils Elbow: a rock band formed in Napier, Hawkes Bay in 2007. They play live as a trio and often in various other formations including acoustic sets and featuring various guests. Band members include Alec Withers - vocals and guitar, Ben Lee - bass and vocals, Adam Lamberg - drums.

Dave Boston: local, versatile guitarist, with over 30 years playing experience, Dave Boston is well known for his teaching guitar at Hawkes Bay schools with many of his former pupils going on to perform in major national bands including our own Naked Gun.He will present a set of guitar instrumentals including originals played with guitar accompaniment. Expect some Blues, Latin and Jazz tunes.

Lennie Lawton: local blues guitarist Lennie Lawton moved to the UK where he was domiciled for many years,. He recently returned to Hawkes Bay where he has teamed up with his old band mate Lindsay Gibb to present a range of blues songs and instrumentals, this set promises to please anyone interested in Peter Green{early Fleetwood Mac} blues music or J.J Cale. Lennie Lawtion - guitar, Lindsay Gibb - guitar and vocals.

Country in the Park: February 10th:
Borderline, Hawkes Bay’s answer to country music takes the stage on the 10th of February. Covering music from some of the great names of American country music from the dust bowl era through to alternative country with some of the best from Ryan Adams, Jackson Brown, The Eagles, Ricky Skaggs, Emmy- Lou Harris, Rodney Crowell, John Prine, Jimmy Buffett all the Hanks including Kiwi hero’s the Warratahs plus many more.

Brass, Pipes and Drums: February 17th:
Two off Hawkes Bay’s iconic bands promise to take the park by storm; the first segment of the concert will feature The Hastings Citizens’ Band playing many of their signature tunes and brass band favourites, this is your opportunity to hear one of Hawkes Bays top brass band and to enjoy brass band music at its best.

The City of Hastings Pipe Band will present a programme of ‘march tunes’ in different time signatures, ‘slow airs’, ‘strathspeys’, ‘reels, jigs’ and ‘hornpipes’. A successful competition band they will include set pieces, popular Scottish tunes and will be ably assisted by Ngaire Anderson on keyboard and Highland Dancers. Pipe Bands always manage to capture the moment and this band with their energy and polished performance will have you jigging around the park.

Naked Gun: February 24th:
Naked Gun is a dynamic four piece rock/dance band who is without doubt one of the leading acts of their type in Hawkes Bay. They seamlessly move through all popular musical eras with accurate and entertaining renditions of your favourite bands and their music and songs.

Paint in the Park competition:
- Collect your free 50cmX50cm canvas from Hastings Community Art Center, Russell Street, Hastings and use it to create an artwork inspired by Cornwall Park.
- Return your painting by 15th January 2013 to be eligible for prizes- 1st $500, 2nd & 3rd Humanity Fine Arts vouchers and a people's choice prize of $500.
- All paintings will be sold at Cornwall Park Summer Series for $100; proceeds to promote visual arts in HB of at least High School age.
- Paintings must conform to size (50cmX50cm on stretched canvas) and completed canvases will become the property of Creative Hastings.
