About Matthew
Matthew is principal trombone with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Aurora Orchestra. He has played with some of the finest orchestras and chamber ensembles in the world, such as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, recorded and appeared in film and television scores, and worked with some of the greatest conductors of this generation.

After studying Music at King’s College London and the Royal College of Music, Matthew took up the position of principal trombone with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera. Since then he has held principal trombone positions with the Orquesta Filharmónica de Santiago in Chile, and the Orchestra of Opera North, before starting with the RPO in January 2010.

As a soloist and chamber musician Matthew has performed all over the U.K. including London’s Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room. He performed the U.K. Première of Kurt Schwertsik’s Trombone Concerto at St. Johns’, Smith Square, and has had a number of works written for him including The Conquests of Zeus by Oliver Rudland and Circus Games by Robert Keeley. He is also a member of the award-winning Lancier Brass Quintet.

In September 2011, Matthew began studying for an MA in Specialized Performance at the Hochschule der Künst, Bern, focusing on solo trombone performance. From September last year he started teaching at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and he is on the executive board for the British Trombone Society, taking an active part in promoting the trombone, developing its repertoire and bringing it to new audiences. Matthew is an Antoine Courtois artist, and plays an AC440.
