Sebastian Tewinkel - conductor
Diedre Irons - piano

Sibelius - Valse Triste
Chopin - Piano Concerto No.2 in F minor
Beethoven - Symphony No.6 ‘Pastoral’

Valse Triste (Sad Waltz) was composed for the play “Kuolema” written by Sibelius’ brother in law. It reflects the opening scene of the play where one of the characters appears to dance with a shadowy, death-like figure.

When Chopin gave the premiere of his second piano concerto, in the first public concert of his own music in Warsaw on March 17, 1830, he was immediately acclaimed as a national hero. His first appearance in Paris on February 26, 1832, again performing this concerto, attracted the city’s most discriminating audience including Liszt and Mendelssohn, who were full of praise for the work.

Diedre Irons is one of New Zealand’s most distinguished performing musicians and the CSO is delighted to welcome her back to the Christchurch stage.

A lover of nature, Beethoven often spent time walking around the countryside. Symphony No. 6 which the composer himself titled “Pastoral” was described by Beethoven as an expression of feeling than painting in sound. Although not well received by its audience when it was premiered in December 1808, it is now extremely popular in the world’s concert halls and is hailed as a musical triumph for its masterful depiction of the joy of nature.
