Here is your chance to see inside the gates and the grounds that have been endorsed as a 'Garden of national Significance'. No dogs allowed on this walk.

The grounds cover about 12 hectares, some of which is flat lawn or garden, with much of the rest being steep hillside. Exotic species of trees are increasingly being complemented by trees and shrubs native to New Zealand. The grounds, which are maintained by contract gardeners, were extensively redeveloped and re-landscaped in the late 1990s.

The grounds have many heritage features and several plaques mark trees planted by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the late Maori Queen, Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, and former Governors-General and their spouses. It has also significance as a named Maori site known as Kaipapa and was the former site of the Mt View Lunatic Asylum, and a remnant from that era, known as "Convict's Wall" still exists.

Start time: Meet from 10am for a 10:30am start. Duration is approximately 40 minutes.

Parking: There will be limited parking inside the grounds, so public transport may be a good option for some. Opposite the entrance to Government House is pay and display parking starting at $3 for one hour, $5 for two hours.

Meeting place: On the entrance lawn, inside the Hospital Road entrance.

Track: The track is on sealed paths and grass. Some steep parts at the beginning, but otherwise downhill and flat. As the walk is reasonably short you will have the option of walking the course twice.
