In association with the Auckland Pride festival, Artstation is proud to present a group show including the work of Sarah Murphy, Ponti, Deborah Rundle and Layne Waerea.

In 1951 recently married American artist Robert Rauschenberg made Should Love Come First? as he commenced a love affair with fellow male artist Cy Twombly. The original artwork featured the artist’s footprint opposite a diagram showing the male steps for the waltz.

Sixty years on, the borrowed title serves as a starting point for the exhibiting artists to look at queer notions of love. Ephemeral and abstract, personal and universal, social and political, love comes to the fore. Should Love Come First? engages with the complexities of love.

The exhibition will include a variety of media including performance, sound works, video, painting and sculpture. The artists are interested in critical debate, community engagement, and – in the spirit of Robert Rauschenberg – slippage between art and life.

In association with the Auckland Pride Festival.
