Bernstein West Side Story: Symphonic Dances
Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue
Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances

There is more than just a passing connection with the works on this programme. In 1924 Rachmaniov was in the audience of a concert in New York titled An Experiment in Modern Music. This is the concert where American composer and pianist, George Gershwin premiered his ground-breaking Rhapsody in Blue.

Rachmaninov’s swan song Symphonic Dances is a retrospective work that sums up Rachmaninov’s musical and personal philosophy. Yet it is also an astonishingly youthful creation that shows the composer at the peak of his powers.

The Symphonic Dances from West Side Story communicates all the tension of the musical – the chaotic pace and the nervous vigour of urban life in America. A prolific composer, Leonard Bernstein wrote for almost all genres and was heavily influenced by his Jewish upbringing as well as jazz.

Making a welcome return to our stage is pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk, whose performance with the orchestra in 2012 was truly outstanding and there is no doubt he will impress again in what will be a momentous finale in our 2013 Lamb & Hayward Masterworks series.
