The Puhinui International 3 Day Event is a pinnacle event on the New Zealand eventing calendar, attracts the cream of Kiwi eventers and this year a host of international eventers including World No 1, Andrew Nicholson. Close to the Auckland Airport, the Puhinui Reserve is a very easily accessible and attractive, making it a great outing for a wide range of people from those ardent eventing fans through to those keen on experiencing the thrill of eventing for the first time.

Eventing is best described as an equestrian triathlon. Comprised of three phases, the sport tests a rider’s skill more completely than any other. There are various classes scheduled, from the challenging CCI3* to novice level.

Dressage, the first phase held on Friday 6 December, shows the horse's and rider’s ability to perform a series of prescribed intricate movements on the flat in an enclosed arena. The second phase is on Saturday 7 December. The challenging cross-country course involves the horse and rider galloping over natural terrain, jumping a variety of fixed obstacles along the way including the spectacular water jump in the main arena. Puhinui provides an amazing venue for this alongside the Manukau harbour. In the final phase of show jumping held on Sunday 8 December, horse and rider jump a series of easily knocked-down fences in the main arena. The rider and horse combination accumulate penalty points in each phase based on varying factors and the combination with the lowest amount of points at the end of the 3 phases takes home top honours. It is an exciting sport attracting interest from all levels of equestrians, from weekend hobby riders to professional international stars.

Andrew Nicholson, the World No 1 ranked Eventing Rider, will be at the event on Friday, and other kiwi eventing stars usually based overseas will be at the event at various times. Jock Paget (Badminton & Burghley winner) along with Blyth Tait (double world champion & Olympic gold medal winner), Lizzie Brown (Boekelo winner), Joe Meyer (NZ Olympian based in Florida) and Clarke Johnstone (Bronze medalist at World Equestrian Games) will be there. There will be opportunities to interact and learn from these riders even though they are not competing.

A “Fan Zone” will be used at various times during the competition to feature these stars. Andrew will be the first to utilise this area on the Friday lunchtime, giving everyone the opportunity to come along and hear his tips and advice, and a few stories. Blyth Tait has kindly offered to be Andrew’s interviewer, so expect lots of laughs and banter. There will be time to ask questions and maybe even get an autograph or a photo with the World No 1 Eventing Rider before he gets on a plane that night to head back to UK. The fan zone will be used throughout the event with the other international riders making appearances. Andrew will also lead a course walk on Friday. Our website will have more details.

There will be many trade stands catering for those involved in the sport through to those wanting a good range of food and drinks.

The cost of entry is $5 per person, children under 13 free.

You could spend the whole day watching the exhilarating cross country phase either from the various vantage points around the beautiful Puhinui Reserve on foot, or in scheduled four wheel drive guided tours. You may prefer a more up-market approach and relax in the Hospitality marquee, positioned to take in full view of the main arena over looking the water jump complex on Saturday or the showjumping on Sunday, while enjoying fine hospitality. Cost per day of the hospitality marquee is $100.00 per person for a full days entertainment, morning and afternoon tea, sumptuous buffet lunch and complimentary bar facilities. This needs to be prebooked and details are on our website.

Please note that as you will be in a rural environment, suitable footwear and clothing, appropriate for the weather conditions are recommended.
