In this concert in the Friday Lunchtime Series, Jian Liu, NZSM Lecturer in Piano and Martin Riseley, Head of Strings and Lecturer in Violin, will perform a towering masterpiece of the sonata literature, the popular 'A Major Sonata for Violin and Piano' by Cesar Franck. One of his best known compositions, and considered one of the finest sonatas for violin and piano ever written, the 63 year old Franck finished the work in 1886 as a wedding present for the virtuoso violinist Eugène Ysaÿe.

They will also present some works by other virtuoso violinists, including Sarasate’s 'Introduction and Tarantella' and Paganini’s 'Moto Perpetuo'. The latter contains over 3200 notes for the violin alone - all 3200 separately and rapidly articulated– rather than melismatically linked. It should last about four minutes, at an average speed of over 13 notes a second!

Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music is a joint enterprise of Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington.
