Member groups of the New Zealand Shark Alliance will be hosting an Auckland screening event of Rob Stewart’s critically acclaimed documentary Sharkwater that highlights the devastating effects of the global trade in shark fin. Overfishing is causing a dramatic decline in global shark stocks, primarily for the fins. New Zealand is in the top twenty exporters in the world of shark fin. Although over 98 countries in the world have banned shark finning in territorial waters, New Zealand continues to harvest species on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Vulnerable and Near Threatened Lists (Porbeagle, Mako and Blue sharks).

The New Zealand Shark Alliance represents a diverse group of marine conservationists committed to shark conservation through the aim to ban shark finning in New Zealand waters. Current legislation is due for review early 2013 with the Ministry of Primary Industries revising the National Plan of Action – Sharks as part of a four year cycle. New Zealanders will have an opportunity through the public consultation process to petition the government and to make submissions to influence legislation creating better protection for sharks.

There will be a Q & A with New Zealand Shark Alliance members after the screening and discussions regarding petitions and submissions will also be made.
