Overture to Mitridate K.87;
Exsultate jubilate K.165;
Symphony No. 29 K.201.

Born in Salzburg in 1756, Mozart was the son of a leading court musician. Prodigiously gifted, Mozart toured Europe extensively from a very young age, dazzling the nobility with his performances and compositions.

Mozart composed what is generally considered his first mature opera Mitridate at the ripe old age of 14. Mitridate was composed during his first visit to Italy and premiered in Milan where it was immediately hailed a triumph.

Returning to Italy for the third time in January 1773, Mozart composed Exsultate jubilate for the castrato Venanzio Rauzzini. It is an exquisitely crafted work that places virtuostic demands on the singer. Making her debut with the CSO to perform this work is New Zealand soprano, Emma Fraser.

Composed between visits to Vienna and Munich at the end of 1774, Mozart’s 29th Symphony is described as his most notable symphony up to that point in his career and demonstrates his ability to balance drama, rhythmic drive and energy.
