Some think it’s kitsch, others see it as culturally iconic. This talk investigates what kiwiana is and what it reveals about New Zealand and its history. From the buzzy bee to the sausage sizzle, kiwiana is currently experiencing a revival that demands critical investigation.
Associate Professor Katie Pickles teaches New Zealand history at the University of Canterbury, including the course ‘kiwi culture’. She is the author of two monographs about gender and colonial identity and is currently co-editing two collections, Endurance and the First World War, and New Zealand’s Empire.
