Immerse yourself in an interactive installation. Discover a collection of digital instruments which manipulate a visual and audio reactive environment. Become part of an orchestra, playing the work with interfaces such as sensors and joyysticks to produce compositions of sound and light.

You know that you can’t fold the washing or make a coffee with a joystick, but did you know you can use them to influence an art work? Come and have a play with some surprising joysticks and discover the immersive sound and light universe of Jeu Play.

Jeu Play is an interactive digital art and music installation which the audience has open access to explore, perform and interact with. During Auckland Fringe, lights and sounds are the decor of a shipping container located at Silo Park. As you approach Jeu Play you will discover the decor consists of immersive lights and sounds, upon entering the installation you will notice some unusual objects made from joysticks and other devices which invite you to play them. Buttons and sensors control and influence different parts of this universe. Audiences’ actions play and influence the work to produce compositions of sound and light.

At various times the installation changes “mode” to an orchestra performance space when a conductor invites a group of the audience to play together as an orchestra by following instructions. Each member of the ephemeral orchestra chooses an interface and in a few minutes, the conductor teaches them how to use their new instrument. This ensemble of novice instrumentalists is then ready to perform together a 20 minute musical and visual symphony together.

JeuPlay applies emerging technologies to the centuries old tradition of orchestra and provides a unique place to experiment and build exciting new ideas and collective experiences, come and have a play!

Jeu Play will be first shown at The Performance Arcade, Wellington 2013 and development of the work is gratefully funded by Creative New Zealand. It is the result of a collaboration between the Wellington based Interrupt Collective and the French association NOP, New Orchestra Practices.

For Interrupt Collective Jeu Play continues a series of interactive works which are aimed at expanding innovative use of emergent technologies into the public arena. With an ever increase in the dissolving boundaries of physical and digital space, Jeu Play investigates this relationship, and how the actual experience of the technologies can guide how we interface with this new amalgamation of the digital and physical. NOP explores predominantly new digital instruments and computer music devices. NOP’s main goal is to bring together various audiences, artistic practices and cultures to develop and question “New Orchestra Practices”. NOP has an existing joystick orchestra based in Auckland since May 2011 and wishes to share unusual orchestra practices with a wider audience through experiences like JeuPlay.
