Ahead of the Wellington Jazz Festival Wellington will host Darcy James Argue and Sean Wayland with the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra for a single show at the Ilott Theatre on May 30.

The world’s leading young jazz composer and steampunk big band leader, Darcy James Argue along with celebrated pianist Sean Wayland, team up with Australia’s leading jazz orchestra for three New Zealand shows to celebrate the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra’s 10th Anniversary.

The Sydney-based Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra (JMO) ensemble will perform their new music and collaborate with these two stars of the New York jazz scene.

Since its inception in 2003, ARIA Nominated JMO has gained a reputation as one of the world’s most exciting and innovative independent jazz orchestras. Comprising 17 members playing five saxophones, five trumpets, four trombones, guitar, bass and drums, ‘The Mothership’ represents many of Australia’s finest young improvisers.

Darcy James Argue is one of today’s most talked-about jazz musicians thanks to the phenomenal response to Infernal Machines, his Grammy-nominated debut recording featuring his 18-piece big band, Secret Society. The record was included on more than 100 best-of-the year lists and won Best Debut honors in the prestigious Village Voice Jazz Critics Poll.

New York based, ex-pat Aussie pianist Sean Wayland is well known and admired for his prolific writing and unique harmony and rhythm. Sean has released over 14 critically acclaimed CDs and has worked with some of the world’s most celebrated musicians including Madeliene Peyroux, Allan Holdsworth, Wayne Krantz, and David Binney.

The Sydney-based JMO will commence their tour of Australia and New Zealand on May 25. The Wellington performance will be held at the Ilott Theatre on May 30. Tickets are now on sale now through Ticketek. Full price tickets are $40, with reduced prices for Senior Citizens and children.
