The title of Asaki Kajima's first solo exhibition since establishing this studio points to the way her work gently pulls us into a natural but dreamlike world, where organic shapes and a mixture of found materials merge seamlessly to form a collection of ethereal sculptures.
Drawing on floral design concepts, her native Japanese aesthetic sensibilities and a pre-occupation with the botanical world, Asaki addresses growth, loss, the mingling of her two environments and the idea of home and belonging in these works.
The combination of natural and man-made, and hard and soft materials allows Asaki to explore complex emotional ides and a wider concept of what it is to escape. To Asaki, and escape can be the development from childhood to adulthood, or the movement from reality to imaginary, or in her personal case, emigration from Japan to New Zealand a decade ago.
