Winner of the Best Solo Show at the NZ Fringe 2012 and co-winner of Best of the Fringe at the Dunedin Fringe 2012, Echolalia is a solo clown theatre performance about overcoming one’s fears. Showing at the Basement Theatre from Feb 26 to 28, 2013, Echolalia utilises clown, physical theatre, dance and the subject of autism to present a show about fear and the pitfalls of social etiquette.

Inspired by the humour and directness of autistic children while working with them on a holiday programme, Jen McArthur created a character for the stage who doesn’t register social niceties. “Echo” is a young woman on the spectrum who is preparing for a much needed job interview. Through her efforts she puts our unspoken social rules under the spotlight to find a lot of them wanting. Touching, surprising, hilarious, this is a highly recognisable portrayal of a person doing battle with their fears in a strange world.

Jen McArthur was trained at the VCA in Choreography, Circomedia circus school in Bristol and by clown teachers Giovanni Fusetti, John Bolton and John Wright. She joined the international Kallo Collective (FIN, NZ, FRA) in 2010. The Collective has developed a unique sense of theatre style and physical comedy through drawing from the masters, Chaplin and Keaton, and adding a contemporary twist. They are dedicated to furthering the styles of clown and physical theatre.

“McArthur’s tender performance as Echo is both delightful and heart breaking.” - Salient

“The attention-to-detail in the performance is highly satisfying, and there is no doubt that this is a world-class physical theatre comic.” - Theatreview

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience a tested work steeped in a New Zealand sense of humour, from an internationally experienced performer/creator.
