An Irish comedy by Bernard Farrell
Directed by Brian Keegan

What happens when you let men into one of the last bastions of female exclusivity? You get a hilarious comedy of exposed hidden lives, financial misadventures, deceptions and indiscretions.
Tonight it's Ann turn to host the Book Club evening and as the night progresses, we watch a social occasion disintegrate as secrets, which had been swept under the carpet, finally see the light of day, with both funny and poignant outcomes.

Cast Opportunities
1. Larry: late 40s/early 50s, Ann’s husband, a successful builder during Ireland's surging Green Tiger period. Now in financial trouble with the bank and about to lose everything. Not much of a reader and only agreed to come to the Book Club night to please Ann.

Larry and Ann's relationship is one of solidarity. There are affectionate, loyal and loving to each other, but the financial crises is putting a strain on their relationship.

2. Robert: early to mid-40s. Could be English rather than Irish. Larry's bank manager. A bit of a "Jack the lad" womaniser and a know-all, competitive pain. Views life as a competition and always wants to win.

3. Jennifer: mid- to late 30s. Schoolteacher and Robert’s wife. Likes to show off her French by dropping it into conversations.

Robert and Jennifer's relationship is strained. They are both competitive and want to be in charge.

4. Vincent: late 50s. Larry's brother. Has a dark past, spent time in prison in England. Lives with Larry and Ann. Makes models of iconic buildings with matchsticks, a skill he learned while incarcerated.

What do I need from my actors
The ability to speak with a credible Irish accent is important, although Robert can be English. This play is set in Dublin, which is where I'm from, so that will help the actors. The play is lighthearted, so timing of your delivery and your facial and body expressions will all be important in making the performance fun and enjoyable.

Perusal scripts are available from the office, 534-1401 or info@hlt.org.nz

Rehearsals will be on Tuesdays, Thursdays at 8pm-10pm and on Sundays TBA at a time to suit everyone.
First rehearsal: Sunday, January 19, but there will be a readthrough in December.

Performance season: Saturday, March 1 to Saturday, March 22 (16 performances).
