Widely considered Elgar’s masterpiece, Auckland audiences are treated to this epic tale for the first time in 12 years. Often referred to as an oratorio, much to Elgar’s dislike. The Dream of Gerontius was composed in 1900. Taken from the poem written by Cardinal John Henry Newman, the work is about about the journey of the pious Gerontius from his deathbed, and via his judgement by God, to his eventual settling in the serenity of the lake of Purgatory. All interspersed with angelic choruses or demonic responses.

Calling for large forces including a double chorus with semichorus, Auckland Choral is delighted to be performing with Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Brisbane Chorale and The University of Auckland Chamber Choir.
