Rangitoto College and Coltrane Combo
Lynfield College Big Band

The Lynfield College Big Band is a 20 piece band conducted by Paul Norman, playing music with a focus on great jazz standards with some contemporary swing, latin and funk thrown in. They will be show-casing many of their talented soloists and sensational vocalist, Zion Faletolu. They have had a very successful year, winning the New Orleans Trophy for the best Big Band at the Tauranga National Jazz Festival where they were also judged Best Overall Band. They then competed at the KBB Music Festival where they were one of only two bands to achieve a Gold Award in the 42 strong field. Their most recent success was receiving the Platinum award for best Big Band in the heats of the Auckland Jazz and Blues Club secondary schools competition, and also best Big Band at the finals. The band released a CD last year which will be on sale at the concert.

The Rangitoto College Senior Big Band has had a successful year. After a trip to New York City (!) in April, where they collaborated with 4 of the top US High School Bands, the students performed at various festivals and occasions. Two of the highlights in 2013 have been the top-4 placing at the KBB Music Festival, and the Gold Award won at the Auckland Jazz & Blues Club Competition. The Band, directed by Markus Fritsch, plays an entertaining mix of Swing, Latin, Funk & Fusion numbers with lots of opportunities for the members of each section to improvise…

The Rangitoto College Coltrane Combo also went to New York this year and performed many times in/out of school. Under the leadership of Nathan Collins & Jono Sawyer they tackled a challenging programme, ranging from Chick Corea to Roy Hargrove, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Vinny Valentino and Fruity Loops. Winning the AJ&BC competition was a very special moment for them this year.
