This course examines the social and cultural history of selected chemical elements, such as nitrogen, platinum, hydrogen and radium. You will learn about the discovery of these elements, the political and economic consequences of the resulting technologies and the cultural impact on human societies.

The course will appeal to anyone with an interest in both science and history.

Understand the uses of the selected elements;
Understand the influence of the resulting technologies on modern societies;
Appreciate the cultural impact of scientific discoveries and technological progress.
