The Once Upon and Island Festival of Story is a four day biennial festival held over Queen’s birthday weekend. It takes place in theatres, galleries, parks, markets, on vineyards, marae, up trees, underground and any place a willing audience can be found.

This seventh festival is directed by Tanya Batt, a professional performance storyteller and author of international repute and it aims to celebrate story in all its guises.

It builds upon existing community structures, networks and talent as well as showcasing professional performers from both New Zealand and overseas.

Most of the weekend is dedicated to children and a real highlight of their childhood. But there is something tantalising for grown-ups too. The Adult Storytelling Session at The Goldie Room is 'not to be missed'.
