Travel with Steam Incorporated on one of our new series of “Scenic Daylight” excursions, featuring recently restored diesel locomotive Da1431.

The train will run from Paekakariki to Paekakariki via Wellington, Masterton, Woodville & Palmerston North. Travelling over one of Wellington’s best kept secrets, the grand circle route, we will circumnavigate the Tararua Range in a counter-clockwise direction. During the journey we will pass through Eketahuna and Mangatainoka plus travel through the spectacular Manawatu Gorge. You will be able to see the work being done to clear the massive slip blocking the highway through the gorge.

Complimenting Da1431 the train will comprise our fleet of classic red “steel” cars. There will be an open air viewing platform on the train.

The train will include a buffet counter selling burgers, sausages, sandwiches, drinks and snacks, and a souvenir counter for all sorts of railway and steam memorabilia.

This excursion has been schedule to coincide with celebrations at Woodville to mark the 125th anniversary of the opening of the railway from Woodville to Napier. We intend making a 50 minute stop at Woodville where there will be a display of Kiwi Rail rolling stock, a vintage truck display and photo display. Standard railcar RM31 “Tokomaru” is also expected to be in operation at Woodville.

Woodville will also be a lunch stop. Available at the station will be “Woodville Railway Pies”, a sausage sizzle, pancakes, and locally produced Yummy Mummy’s Cheese Cake, plus tea and coffee.

We will make several other stops during the day for photo opportunities and a leg stretch.

You can board the train at Paekakariki, Plimmerton, Porirua, Tawa, Wellington, Petone, Waterloo, Upper Hutt, Featherston, Carterton and Masterton.

On arrival back the train will terminate at Paekakariki and not run back into Wellington. For passengers boarding at stations other than Paekakariki you will have to transfer to a Tranz Metro service to complete your journey. Our fare does not include travel on Tranz Metro services.
