D1NZ returns to Whangarei for Northland's only drifting event!

Over the past six months, The Cody’s D1NZ National Drifting Championship has been working closely with the Whangarei District Council and local bodies to bring the Championship to a new street course in the Ruakaka District of Whangarei. D1NZ has spent a considerable amount of time, effort and money on the project and had confirmed the placement of concrete barriers through a local supplier in Auckland. There is a significant amount of work including environmental noise effect reports, resource consents, road closures and infrastructure that goes into the building of a street course all which D1NZ has been well underway with.

Three weeks ago, D1NZ was made aware of heavy contributions that made operating the championship in Whangarei a very hard task. These included the contracted supplier cancelling the arrangement after the concrete barriers D1NZ were buying for permanent placement started cracking on short distances around Auckland. This then lead to the contractor pulling out of the deal to ship 70 barriers to Whangarei on the likelihood of barriers cracking and other suppliers were unrealistic in cost to D1NZ. We are pleased we have worked with MSNZ to tackle this issue.

There are other contributing factors that we are now working through with Council to ensure the events success and we are pleased to announce that we will be returning to Whangarei for the first time in two years for Round 5 of the D1NZ Championship as scheduled at the start of the season.

D1NZ is committed to its two long term goals in Whangarei of working with the associated parties to make the Championship Street Round happen on an annual basis so in future we can raise funds for our main goal of building a permanent facility in the Whangarei region to give Northland a driver training and drift facility. D1NZ will be constantly working on ways to make sure this happens.

- Track Run Down -

Local D1NZ driver Daniel "Fanga Dan" Woolhouse in the Castrol Edge Commodore gives us the Whangarei track rundown.

Fanga explains, "From the start line after a burnout to warm tires, you rapidly shift through gears up to the top of 3rd or around 140kmh before aiming for an aggressive near 90 degree outer clip. This corner quickly transfers to an inner apex and then back to an outer clip point while remaining in 3rd gear. You then head up a slight hill where the section esses’s into another outer apex. You need to push the car through all the way to the last outer clip zone and you crest a rise as you reach the outer apex, then back toward another near 90 degree inner apex which hosts a slight jump testing driver skill and commitment as the front of the car gains air off the inner of the apex. Some cars will then drop into second for the last corner, aiming for a nice smooth line out to the last outside clip zone before switching again out over the hill ending the judged section."

As this is D1NZ's first time on this purpose built street track on new chip seal, the surface is going to be a huge factor in setup. With curbs on both sides of the road, Whangarei will separate the men from the boys and set up the run into the Final Round in the closest title race we have ever had.

D1NZ would like to thank the Whangarei District Council and Motorsport NZ for all their help in bringing D1NZ back to Northland as well as 'Fanga' Dan Woolhouse and his family for helping gain the venue.
