One man's battle to save a town torn apart..

“Now Hell and Heaven grapple on our backs, and all our old pretense is ripped away... we are only what we always were, but naked now... And...God's icy wind, will blow!”

The University of Auckland’s one and only drama club mark their triumphant return onto the scene with Miller’s scorching classic, The Crucible; a portrait of one man’s struggle to find truth in the surrounding chaos and fight against temptation on his road to redemption.

It seems the small community of Salem will finally have peace, however, when a group of girls are found dancing in the woods, old feuds and shadowy secrets come to light, turning friends into foes, in what has become one of the darkest chapters in American history. It comes down to one man, John Proctor, who must not only save his wife from the noose, but also stop the frantic hysteria and web of lies that threaten to consume them all.

Director, Luke Thornborough’s true-to-text adaptation successfully showcases the timeless relevance of the overwhelming power of the community over the individual, and through the prominence of deceit, passion and revenge, the play ultimately focuses on the darker side of the group mentality where persecution and faith lead to death and betrayal.

“The frightening thing about ‘The Crucible’ should be the sensible, reasoned and educated individuals who heartily agree with killing their neighbours.” – director, Luke Thornborough
