A Rembrandt for fifty dollars? A Chagall for $20? Highly unlikely, only because there are no Rembrandts or Chagalls in the auction. But how about an original interpretation of a renowned Chagall? This example is among the many bargains of local and regional New Zealand art about to be auctioned for charity. Over $ 50,000 worth of art has been donated to this unique charity fund-raiser. More than 150 pieces of art - paintings, ceramics, photographs, sculpture and the like - will come under the hammer to raise funds for SPELADD, a regional organisation that deals primarily with young people who have specific learning difficulties, dyslexia and difficulties with numeracy and who may suffer with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or Asperger’s (High Functioning Autism) and related conditions.

Collected through the generosity of artists who have shown at Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts since its establishment in 1997, the art available for purchase includes work by professional artists, students and ‘Sunday Afternoon’ painters. The range and variety of art donated for the auction hopefully will mean that there is something on offer for everyone. As a non-reserve auction it is hoped that all the works will sell. Only one work has a fixed reserve and that is an original John Bevan Ford which has a reserve to insure that it will sell for an amount worthy of its true value as few original works by this late, internationally prominent artist are currently available for purchase.

The funds raised from this auction will assist the work of SPELADD, a significant regional organisation that provides services to the wider Manawatu, Horowhenua, Rangitikei and Tararua areas with the majority of its clientele residing in Palmerston North, Feilding, Levin and Pahiatua. SPELADD’s objective is to enable those persons with Dyslexia, Specific Learning Disabilities or Attention Deficit Disorders to function successfully in the community by providing information, assessment, support and tuition. The organisation’s focus is early intervention; its aim is to support those persons aged between 4 and 18 years of age. Essentially a volunteer organisation governed by a committee of seven it employs only two part-time staffers but assists over 250 persons yearly!

Through the generosity of many artists such as Austin Davies, John O’Sullivan, Leonard Hsu, Judy Bryant, Johanna Ward, Annette Dunnage-Roy, Colin Hoare, Raemon Rolfe, Judy Johnstone, Greg Wilson, Barbara Dawkins and a host of other talented artists and the generosity of the bidders SPELADD will raise a sum required to assist the many clients that SPELADD sees in a year. Funds will go toward the costs of assessments, SPELADD tutors, the purchase of educational materials and specialist publications and to help underwrite the admin costs associated with running the organisation.

A preview evening will be held on Friday and the auction the Saturday night from 4pm, doors open at 3.30pm. A five dollar entry fee applies and covers both days. Light refreshments with be provided. During the pre-view evening and during the auction attendees will also be able to purchase works at or near their regular retail price instead of waiting for the work to come up for auction. As an event on behalf of a charitable organisation it is hoped that the bidders will dig deep to support SPELADD. In addition to the live auction there will be a silent auction with the opportunity to purchase artwork by listing your bid on a form set out in front of each item where you can see what others have bid and perhaps what it will take to purchase an item, or not! Payment for successful bids or outright purchases is by cash, credit card or EFTPOS. Artwork will be available to be removed from the auction hall after payment is made. It is hoped that the public will turn out in sufficient numbers to make this event a real success for both SPELADD and those who will take home a real treasure.
