This year The Old Library will be holding a series of Smart Talks once a month, bringing some of the most interesting speakers in New Zealand arts to Whangarei for an interesting and informative evening.

This month it is a book launch for local poet Vaughan Gunson.

Poetry potential
Live in Northland

Imagine being zinged during a Sam Hunt poetry recital?

Hikurangi poet, Vaughan Gunson received the compliment of a life-time when Hunt took a break from his poetry to extol the Northland poet's virtues, referring to him as “very talented.”

This is not the first time Vaughan has received praise from those in the poetry world, in fact much like Hunt, Vaughan is already part of New Zealand's cultural tapestry with poems published in print publications nationwide including the New Zealand Listener, Takahe, Sidestream and New Zealand Poetry.

One of his poem's fast food workers was used in the 2010 Level 2 NCEA English exam for New Zealand High School students and most recently, Vaughan got a collection of his poems published.

His poetry book entitled: This Hill, all it's about is lifting it to a higher level, is very popular with New Zealand poetry elite including National Poetry Day organiser Siobhan Harvey who raves about the poetry: “The book mines new and familiar territory in surprising and exciting ways.”

The territory covers ecological, economical and political issues that are very close to this political activist and poet's heart. Vaughan has been teaching visual art at NorthTec for ten years and plays an active role in political campaigns.

If you would like to meet the poet in person, visit the Old Library on Thursday 27th September for the second round of Smart Talks where Vaughan will be the title speaker. He will also be available to sign any books you buy on the night.

The book, published by Steele Roberts in Wellington will is available for purchase by emailing info@steeleroberts.co.nz or calling 04 499 0044.
