Opening Thursday 14 June, 6pm
We’ve all experienced dreams that recall familiar places and situations that we can’t quite fathom a meaning or connection. Some of us, like local filmmaker Shaun Garea, dwell on these night scenes more deeply.
Inspired by the greater works of Franz Kafka, Garea decided to dissect the notion of dreams by creating a series of videos, shot in and around west Auckland exploring the realm of emotions in the subconscious mind. Working with solo actor Dwayne Cameron, visual effects and music, Garea has assembled a collection of filmed sequences that express human emotions such as fear, guilt and love. Each dream fragment is played in a random order – not dissimilar to the disorder of a real dream – creating a unique sequence for the viewer as they enter the room. Each screening of the shuffled collection of vignettes has the ability to take on a dream-like association where reality, fiction and fantasy merge and mutate.
While no violence is portrayed in the film sequences, there is an element of psychological tension that may disturb some people. We recommend a viewing age of 16+.
