“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

The glorious acoustic of Wellington Cathedral of St Paul will echo to Heinrich Schütz’s starkly beautiful setting of the Passion according to St Matthew, performed by The Tudor Consort under Music Director Michael Stewart.

The Matthaüs-Passion dates from the final years of Schütz’s life, and sees him turning away from the florid Italian style and recreating the austerity of the very earliest Passion settings. Entirely unaccompanied, the hypnotic quality of the quasi-plainsong narrative is punctuated with dramatic choruses that pre-empt those of JS Bach some eighty years later.

The Tudor Consort is delighted to revisit this work for the first time since 1994, with John Beaglehole singing the part of the Evangelist and Ken Ryan as Christus.

This magnificent Lenten work will be performed on Saturday March 31, not on Good Friday, as has been traditional for The Tudor Consort’s Holy Week concert.
