Urgent call for volunteers for our big plastic bottle recycling effort!

Check out this horrifying video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a4S23uXIcM - we really need four more volunteers to help on our mission to educate people to recycle on our plastic bottle recycling effort! A one-litre plastic water bottle can break down into enough small fragments to be washed up on every kilometre of beach in the world so bottles thrown carelessly away have a devastating cost on the environment.

There are an estimated 13,000 pieces of plastic on every square kilometre of the ocean surface. These tiny pieces are easily swallowed by marine life and can have a deadly effect. More than one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed as a result every year. And it’s not just bottles tossed overboard; any bottle dropped anywhere can eventually make its way into the ocean.

So we are really looking for your help on the Round the Bays Run. As you can imagine lots of plastic drink bottles are deposed of during the event. We want to make sure that these bottles don’t end up in landfills or our oceans so we will be out and about encouraging people not to be lazy recyclers and place their bottles in recycling bins. We’ll also carry out a litter pickup for those bottles that are left on the ground.

Email info@conservationvolunteers.co.nz to book into the project.
