Richard and Michael Ponder have joined forces to create this exhibition in Mike's home territory. Grape grower, author, owner of one of the first olive groves in NZ, Mike is passionate about everything he does.

And the art is world class, both have been painting professionally since the seventies, developing and refining their styles - Richard's bright and dynamic and Mike's iconic minimalism are forces to be reckoned with.

Mike has produced three books on his art. The first, “Textured Colour” has sold out, there are limited copies available of "My Way - A Touch of Red", and his latest book “Oil on Canvas” is readily available. All three books show some of the best examples of his recent work in both oils and watercolours. His oil paintings are bold, full of texture and colour, sometimes delicate with amazing detail and always with a touch of red - they are painted with knives only. Many people will recognise his style from the very popular driza-bone image of the stockman that was used extensively for over ten years.

Richard Ponder, sought-after by up and coming artists as a mentor, has always worked with colour and form to create art that behaves three dimensionally on the canvas. “My love of roaming the New Zealand backcountry with my family led me to concentrate on landscape painting in the late 1970s and early '80s I was especially interested in composition and the interaction between colours in different lights. During this period, dawn with its variety of light and colour interested me most, and so many of my paintings were based on early morning observations. This work came together in my first book “Quiet Places”, published in 1987. The three thousand copies were quickly sold. On the proceeds of its success, Joanna and I visited galleries in Australia, America and Europe. I fell in love with the strength of Van Gogh, the impressions of Monet, the colour of Perceval and the exhalation of Pollock.”

"To see it you have to see it live, these paintings are like a force of nature commanding their space on the wall."
