Audio Foundation

Rachel Shearer uses the Audio Foundation Head Quarters to further explore the capacity of the acoustic domain (in the absence of visual cues) to territorialise and engender space. By inserting an additional aural layer within the specific architectural configurations of the Audio Foundation HQ using Spotlight speakers - a recent development in speaker technology that generates a narrow beam of ultrasound frequencies - our experience of the material and immaterial conditions of the location produce specific poetics of space. Within this, the introduced sonic material looks to engage with notions of how we perceive time as experienced in a particular place.

Biography:
Rachel Shearer's history in a range of audio practices contribute to her approach to sound making. As an artist she has been exploring site-specific sound installation practice. Her most recent public commission, ‘The Flooded Mirror’ is a permanent sound installation situated in the Wynyard Quarter on Auckland’s newly developed waterfront. She sound designs and composes for film. Active as an experimental musician since the late 1980s, Rachel has released material with labels Xpressway (NZ), Flying Nun (NZ), Ecstatic Peace (US), Corpus Hermeticum (NZ), Family Vineyard (US) among others.

Special thanks to Coopers, CNZ and ASB Trust for their ongoing support.
