The current Australian Poetry Slam champion Luka Lesson will be heading our way in early May. As his visit does not coincide with one of our monthly shows, we are hosting a special one-off show featuring Luka as well as local poet, musician and writer Hinemoana Baker, fresh back home from a visit to New York to read her poetry! The two will also be joined by Laurent Dunningham who is a Kiwi currently making ripples on the spoken word scene over in Melbourne.

There will also be an open mic portion to kick off the show. It's first, first serve for the open mic, so make sure you get there early if you want to read.

The gig will be in the guest room at The Southern Cross.

- Luka Lesson -

Luka Lesson is the current Australian Poetry Slam Champion and Co-director of The Centre for Poetics and Justice.

Luka has been active in community development work utilising hip-hop and poetry as a form of self-determination and raising awareness for marginalised young people for many years. He has taught Indigenous Studies at Monash University for the past two years and holds a first class honours degree in the same field.

Luka has performed his work beside the likes of Shane Koyczan (Canada), Amir Sulaiman (USA), Lowkey (UK) and Lemon Anderson (USA), and was invited to perform a full feature at the famous Nuyorican Poet's Cafe in New York City in 2011 and 2012. Luka has performed at the Bookworm Literary Festival in Beijing, China and will be touring throughout the USA including San Francisco, New York City, Denver Colorado, Los Angeles and Austin Texas before touring New Zealand and returning home to perform at the Sydney Writer's Festival in May. Still only only at the beginning of his career Luka's roof raising performances and expert writing has built him a reputation that already spans the globe both as a poet and conscious hip-hop artist.

In describing Luka Lesson's work, four-time USA National Poetry Slam Champion Taylor Mali states:

"I'm not really into hip hop—I'm too old, I guess—but Luka Lesson is a sonic literary genius, and that is what I love. So if he is hip hop, then I guess I love hip hop after all."

- Hinemoana Baker -

Hinemoana Baker has published, produced and performed as a singer songwriter and poet since the early 1990s in New Zealand, Indonesia, Australia and the US. She also works as a producer, with a special passion for spoken word and sonic experimentation. Her writing and music have taken her all around New Zealand for readings and performances, and offshore as well.

In 2009 she was Arts Queensland Poet in Residence, and it was during this residency that she met and performed with Luka Lesson for the first time.

In 2010 she spent three months in the United States as a writer in residence at the University of Iowa. A highlight of her time in the United States was a performance in Pittsburgh alongside Pulitzer Prizewinner Yosef Komunyakaa and the Oliver Lake Big Band. She has just returned from readings and performances in New York City as part of the Phantom Billstickers Poetry on Posters launch.
