From February the 24th for 24 days, Newtown artist Paul Forrest will be an Artist in Residence in the Michael Fowler Centre foyer – creating new paintings whilst constantly enveloped in the recorded soundscapes of award winning Wellington musician, Rhian Sheehan.

Paul is very interested in opening up other senses or creative pathways and seeing where they lead – particularly with other artists who are aware of the massive changes taking place environmentally and how we as humans occupy and affect the world around us.

2011 saw him creating paintings in response to the poems of New Zealand poet laureate Brian Turner whilst on a painting residency in Wanaka.

As well as creating new works on site, Paul will be exhibiting 30 of his latest oil paintings which include those influenced by his time in Wanaka. The centre piece of this exhibition is a painting entitled ‘Occupied Territory’ which was nearly 5 months in the making. Wildly colourful and hugely complex, it depicts a cityscape at dusk in all its power-sucking glory.

Paul thrives on the interface between the artist and the community where he hosts his own exhibitions and creates work on site. His residency during the 2010 Arts Festival saw 16000 people view his exhibition. He is interested in meeting and observing people from all walks of life while they engage with his work. It takes the results of his creative expression beyond being a commodity into the realm of communion.

Passionate, uncompromising and 2 years in the making – this is a must see exhibition.
