The launch of Ora Nui, a new journal of Maori writing edited by Anton Blank, was prompted by a passionate belief that the Maori urban and middle class creative voice has been largely silenced by a focus on stories such as Once Were Warriors, Boy and Whale Rider that depict Maori as rural, poor and traditional.

Writers Te Awhina Arahanga, Anton Blank, Jacq Carter and Robert Sullivan join chair Paul Diamond for readings and a conversation about what constitutes a Maori voice and who ‘owns’ the Maori narrative.
