This concert marks our 21st year of performances, and the Orchestra is celebrating the occasion by premiering a new work (Orchestral Suite: Whatungarongaro te tangata toi tu whenua/As man disappears from sight the land remains) written for the group by its founder, Andrew Buchanan-Smart.
This is followed by two works from Beethoven at his most heroic - Symphony No. 5 and the Emperor Piano Concerto. The latter continues our long-running exploration of Beethoven’s piano concertos with the brilliant Diedre Irons. Beethoven's Fifth Symphony changed music forever. It is one of the most recognisable symphonic works (opening with the famous four-note "fate" motif) and pure excitement from start to finish.
Conductor: Peter Walls;
Piano: Diedre Irons.
