Te Kōkī, New Zealand School of Music welcomes contemporary clarinet specialist Marij van Gorkom who, as well as this public concert, will present at a Composer's Workshop and masterclass, and clarinet masterclass while she is in Wellington.

SS:NNd [Sonic Spaces: New Netherland] is a collaboration and exchange between The Netherlands and New Zealand, turning our world inside out and upside down. It focuses on current music for bass clarinet and electronics by Dutch and New Zealand composers. This concert will feature works by Dugal McKinnon, Hermione Johnson, John Croft, and Alison Isadora.

SON1CSPAC3S is an overall project representing an exploration and discovery of sonic spaces with the bass clarinet centre stage. Each piece takes its own unique place in the sonic space. The listener can engage personally and emotionally in its sounds but also understand the objective nature of each work. The sole aim is to create a point of departure, in order to provide and generate dialogue, discussion, and a way forward towards refinement and reinvention.

Marij van Gorkom studied music and chemistry, first at Indiana University, where she studied clarinet with Eli Eban, and then after obtaining the BS degree in chemistry, she moved to Leiden University to follow the MSc program in biophysical chemistry. In 2007 she obtained her BM degree in both bass clarinet and (e-flat) clarinet at Codarts, University of Professional Arts Education, in Rotterdam. She studied bass clarinet with Henri Bok and (e-flat) clarinet with Jan Jansen and José Luis Estellés. Currently she is studying 'clarinet baix' with Harry Sparnaay at the Esmuc in Barcelona.

With the improvising ensemble Free Impulse she was involved in combining contemporary jazz, world music, classical music and free improvisation on stage. With the reed quintet Pentatiek she brings music into a more intimate and classical setting, playing repertoire from as early as the renaissance to the current century. Her newest ensemble trio-to-go is dedicated to contemporary music in collaboration with composers
