Now and Then: Enduring and Developing Themes In Contemporary Photography
17 November 2012 – 27 January 2013

Now & Then explores trends and themes in four decades of fine art photography in New Zealand. The exhibition is drawn from the collection of Te Manawa and features the work of thirty eight photographers. Now & Then also revisits The Active Eye, the 1975 exhibition developed by the Manawatu Art Gallery, which influenced other New Zealand art galleries to collect contemporary photography.

Luit Bieringa and Julie Catchpole, both former directors of the Manawatu Art Gallery, discuss the importance of The Active Eye exhibition and this collection of New Zealand photography.

Lecture: Wednesday 28 November 6 pm
Athol McCredie, Curator of Photography at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, presents an illustrated lecture on photography in the 1970s.
