Waiheke Island is an amazing place for artists and performers. This month a collection of musicians led by local singer/songwriter Soulsista Aotearoa have come together from across New Zealand to the Music For Life event. With sponsorship from the beautiful Rangihoua Estate venue, this day of fun, love and music is a celebration of family & community looking to impact a sensitive issue with love.

The event will be a NZ premiere of Music For Life. With the idea of impacting continued awareness surrounding the delicate issue of suicide within New Zealand. Despite our beautiful natural heritage and warm hearted culture, New Zealand unfortunately holds some of the highest statistics worldwide.

Main event organizer SoulSista, aka Mel Davis, was inspired by her work as an international artist. She began campaigning for this issue when she realised what an impact performers can have: “There are so many amazing people out there who may not realise they are not alone in this world”, she says. "I'm clear there is something missing for all our people and maybe its knowing the life is the only option! As musicians, I know I've gone through some dark moments in life and I now know... it takes just getting through the tribulation at hand... or all the tribulations at hand! And... it's time to make a difference for all people! As one of my songs state: I know we're all individual but we all play a part!”

The 31st is designed to be a real fun filled family event, Rangihoua Estate opens for guests from 11am, and the event begins at 12-6pm. There will be a small charge/koha on the gate, and discounts for families. The main point is togetherness & skill-sharing, so everyone is invited to join the after-gig jam, bring instruments & play with some of the headline musos. There will also be food, stalls, graffiti artists to paint with anyone, water slide from our local fire dept, spoken word poetry and various groups to speak with about challenging issues and a great interactive atmosphere.

“The idea is to motivate Aotearoa with fun, love and music, in making a difference," Mel says. “This delicate sensitive issue is bigger than we speak about. As we identify more specific needs, and in honouring families of those who have lost people, we intend that from the success of this event on Waiheke Island/Auckland, we anticipate rolling this scheme nationwide.”

Along with a modest budget through Creative Communities New Zealand, from the Waiheke Youth Initiative, the event is being made possible by generous sponsorship from Waiheke Island business and individuals and pledges of time and energy towards the event. All proceeds after expenses from Music For Life will be put towards workshops to make an impact these statistics.
