Responding to the curatorial kaupapa established by St Paul St Gallery - to interrogate the concept and practice of fearless speech as it occurs across many issues and forms of speaking, the students participating in the Moving Image workshop sought to consider how moving image might be utilised as a form of speech, to declare a position, to witness an event, to enact or have agency and provide a form of resistance. In doing so they have worked collectively to create a body of work that responds to pressing concerns around ecology, the politics of asset sales, the place of protest and the role of a poetic practice within these landscapes. There's an investigation around the slipperiness of representation: within the format of documentary making, the handling of history, the 'ready made' and found footage, its place within performativity and the construction of the self.

The high-definition camera and production workshop aimed at building skills and theoretical contexts for students working across a range of platforms and approaches in moving image. The workshops covered pre-production through to post-production and established a productive workflow to integrate and develop moving image and audio into our students studio practice. While the production processes engaged within this workshop followed professional industry practices the overall aim of the class was one of experimentation.
