Monuina e Kirisimasi - Celebrating the Spirit of a Niue Christmas - Past and Present

Decorating trucks with colourful crafts and driving through villages throwing lollies to children with music blaring are early memories from curator and artist Glenda Vilisoni’s Christmases on her homeland island of Niue. Trees and family pets were also dressed for the Festive Season and locals would walk around celebrating the meaning of Christmas, creativity and having fun – without shop bought gifts! This time of year revives those memories and the matua – elder artists – will join with the younger generation to share their stories and art and craft making for two weeks beginning Saturday 1 December.

We are celebrating the spirit of a Niue Christmas – past and present but not quite in the old way as all our artworks are for sale”, says Glenda Vilisoni. ‘But our matua might give buyers a little something special as well as that is our way. Our show will be a celebration of memories from our matua as well as our own stories; we will honor them through our art and our crafts”.

Preview: Saturday 1st December 2012
