In this exhibition of Mike O’Kane’s current body of photographic work, he imagines the play-worn toy making a larger-than-life cameo appearance, imbued with the personal experience of an old campaigner. The 'mine, but not me' possession has become contemporary, real, animated and self-possessed. The role of play takes centre stage in this work, and utilising Photoshop software has enabled Mike to create a playground of altered time and scale.

Mike began his first year of formal art education at Nelson Polytechnic in 1994, and graduated with a fine arts degree from Otago Polytechnic School of Art, where he majored in sculpture in 1997. Photography was his sub-major. For several years after graduating, Mike lectured part-time at the Otago Polytechnic Schools of Art, and Design.

Mike’s work can be seen in several NZ galleries this year; in addition to Photospace, there are exhibitions at Nelson Suter Art Society’s Autumn exhibition, the Forrester Gallery in Oamaru, and the Eastern Southland Gallery in Gore.

In this exhibition Mike hopes the viewer will not only enjoy the initial illusion, but will also continue to suspend disbelief, and enjoy a convergence of child and adult aspirations.
