A team of Kiwi explorers will travel to the Utah desert for a simulated mission to Mars. Pairing on-site research and exploration with a coordinated outreach and education program back in New Zealand, students and educators will be able to follow and interact with the crew as they undertake this exciting expedition.

Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) is a unique facility, a self-contained “habitat” located in the middle of the Utah desert in the USA, that provides a stunning Mars-like environment. A project of the Mars Society, the site and protocols replicate constraints like: isolation, time-delayed and limited communication, food rations, hostile atmosphere (crews wear space suits when they leave the habitat). The facility is used for training by research institutions such as NASA and the European Space Agency.

KiwiMars is the 118th crew to have been selected for the MDRS programme since the station was established ten years ago.
