A retrospective celebrating the remarkable achievements of Ken Niven, photographer, artist and former Taupō Museum Director, begins on 3 March and officially opens the gallery named in his memory. The Niven Room, a bright and warm gallery and education room at Taupō Museum, was completed in 2010.

Ken Niven had a career as a popular photographer in Wellington before retiring to Taupō where he took up painting and became the Director of Taupō Museum from 1980 – 1995.

Wonderful commercial photographs from the 1960s, including print ads for washing machines and swimwear, feature in this retrospective as well as exquisite watercolor paintings loaned from local Taupō art collectors and friends of the late artist.

“I’ve really enjoyed curating this exhibition and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to research the life of such an accomplished man,” says Chris Potter, Curator of the Niven Retrospective, Taupō Museum.
